Web site for Operating Systems Course 2016
The web site for the Operating Systems course has been created. However, it is still under construction and contents may be missing or inconsistent. Please be patient and keep checking constantly (as well as this page).
There are few things that the students taking the OS course should be aware of:
Rules and Policies
Due to the standardization demands from the school, the rules and policies on the exercise submissions and the grading scheme will be revised. They will be reflected on the course web site (as they will be build).Textbook
We are going to use the following book as the textbook:Modern Operating Systems, Global Edition, 4/E , by Andrew S. Tanenbaum, ISBN 10: 1292061421, ISBN 13: 9781292061429, Prentice Hall.
Please order your copy at the University Bookstore. The number of copies they will order initially is limited. Normally, buying through the university bookstore will get you deep discount.

OS Textbook
As most (if not all) students received email from the instructor, we will use Modern Operating Systems: Global Edition (4/e) for the textbook of the Operating Systems class. The price at the university bookstore is 7305 (+tax) Yen. Please contact the bookstore and reserve your own copy, because
- the bookstore pre-orders only limited number of copies. If you miss one, you may have to wait for several weeks until the 2nd batch of the orders arrives (or you may have to buy at a higher price somewhere),
- you need your own copy of the textbook on the first day of the class
The ppt files of the "lecture slides" are available at at this URL . Please note that
- these files are merely figures of the textbook. you have to take notes during the lectures and also add notes based on what you read by the textbook
- access is limited from u-aizu.ac.jp domain (contact the instructor if you have any problem).

The web page for Operating Systems 2015
Web page for this year's Operating Systems course has been created. The content may still be incomplete and/or inconsistent.
As mentioned before, the 4th edition of the Modern Operating Systems was published and now it seems that the Global Edition is also available. The problem is whether it is available for us (at a similar group discount price as 3rd Ed.). Any update will be posted on this page.

OS Textbook (3rd edition for this year again)
Earlier, we mentioned that the 4th edition of the Modern Operation Systems had been published . However, its international edition has not been published yet and the availability is not clear at this moment. Therefore, we are going to use the 3rd edition as the textbook of our class again. Since the 4th edition (although only the hard cover) was already published, the 3rd edition became an 'obsolete' edition. Its availability should be limited and the potential students should order your copy at the university book store as soon as they start taking orders.

OS Course Page Updated
The web page for the Operating Systems course has been updated for this year (2014). However, the most contents are still tentative and they will be updated as the course schedule and other details are fixed. For the textbook, tt is quite likely to use the 3rd edition of the Modern Operating Systems because the publishing details of the 4th edition are not available yet.

FYI: Modern Operating Systems, 4th Edition
Modern Operating Systems, 4th Edition
A newer version of the textbook we have been using for the Operating Systems has been published as shown above. At this moment, it is not clear whether the international version (which is substantially cheaper than the North American edition) will be available in a timely manner at a reasonable price. Therefore, we have not made a decision of whether or not we are going to adopt this new version for the OS course in the Fall semester this year as well.

OS Re: Textbook
Dear students taking my OS course. In the previous article , we reported that the publisher will send us first two chapters of the textbook, but what we actually received was just Chapter 1. There also have been other issues related to the communication between us and the publisher and the bookstore. We hope to settle down this issue as soon as possible, you receive your own copy of the textbook, and review and prepare for the OS class using the textbook. If you have any question, or problem, please consult with the instructor.

OS Textbook
As a temporary solution for the late delivery of the textbook, the publisher may send us first two chapters (separate from the book order you placed already). When the details are set, we will notify you again.

OS home page and (tentative) syllabus
The home page and the syllabus for my section of the Operating Systems are available. Those who will take my course should read them and prepare for the course which begins on October 2.
The University Bookstore ordered only ten (10) copies of the textbook (this is not a decision of the instructor, but of the bookstore). If you cannot get one of these, you may have to wait for several weeks to receive your copy.
If you have any question, please send me email.

Textbook for OS and AOS
The Operating Systems class and the Advanced Operating Systems class will use the same textbook, Modern Operating Systems, 3rd edtion, by Andrew S. Tanenbaum (the latter course is in the graduate program and will go through different chapters than undergrad, off course).
Undergrad students will receive email from the university bookstore regarding the textbook order for the 2nd semester soon. There are several reasons you should order the textbook through the bookstore:
- the Japanese subsidiary of the publisher gives us a deep discount (you should compare it with that of amazon, for example),
- since the import books cannot be returned, the bookstore orders a limited quantity. If you miss the first batch of the orders, you won't get it for several weeks after the semester. You might have come an easy way that you didn't have to buy textbooks (even thought you were required), but it is not the case this time.
- The book is a very popular, standard and well written as a reading material. For some of you, to take a course might have meant, copy-and-paste web search results and collecting past-exam problems. Now it's time for reading comprehension.

Textbook for Operating Systems Course
All students will shortly receive a reminder from SAD (or the bookstore) for the textbook order. We will use the same textbook as last year: Modern Operating Systems: International Version, 3/E by Andrew S. Tanenbaum.
If you order the textbook after the course has begun, it would take several weeks to receive the order. Therefore, it is strongly advised to order your copy of the textbook immediately.

OS10 Textbook
We will use the following textbook for the C3 section of the Operating Systems course for this year: Modern Operating Systems, Inernational Edition, 3/E*, by Andrew S. Tanenbaum, ISBN-10: 0138134596, ISBN-13:9780138134594, Prentice Hall.
Please order your copy as soon as possible at the Campus Bookstore: it is your responsibility to have your own copy of the textbook on the first day of the class. You have to understand that not having your textbook is a significant disadvantage for taking the course which is likely to result in failing the course.
